According to CBRE’s H2 2024 report, primary U.S. data center markets experienced a 34% year-over-year supply increase, and nearly 7 gigawatts (GW) of capacity are currently under development across North America. That’s the equivalent of building nearly 7 large nuclear reactors in terms of power demand—within a single commercial sector.
But while attention is often placed on megawatts and megabytes, there is an overlooked third “megatrend” quietly determining the ceiling for growth: the availability of highly trained talent—specifically in electrical, HVAC, fiber optics, systems integration, and mission-critical facility management.
Without it, the industry will hit a hard stop.
